Distortions in the Field (English)

Physics has shown us that in an infinite universe all possibilities are exhausted, and repeated ad infinitum. This is simply a mathematical formula based on simple logic however it can be interpreted in various ways. One of these interpretations says that there are an infinite amount of universes parallel to our own. The lines are the life lines of the same people in many different parallel universes. Seeing that there is an infinity of universes (or realities) nothing can be black or white, but rather everything is black and white with an infinity of tones in between. All points of view are possible and valid, what I think is simply my point of view, no more valid, and no less valid than any other.

Here we see a fractal, they are very easy to understand. Take a geometric shape of say 4 sides and then replicate that shape on each of the shapes four sides ad infinitum.

Constructing a fractal constructed through repetititon (notice how quickly complexity evolves)

As you can see the complexity of the structure becomes exponentially bigger with every step you take, but the principle is always the same and very simple. Just as when we see a tree we can infer, from the geometric structure of the branch, the whole tree, even the part that we can’t see. We too are an integral part of the universe and just another link in the big construction. So the idea here is; if we could just understand ourselves, than by inference we could understand the whole universe, microcosm/macrocosm.

Electrons have a peculiarity, they are like light. They have a duality of being, they are at the same time, waves of energy without any weight, and particles with a tiny but measurable weight. What the new physics has shown us is that electrons are actually waves of energy that encompass the nucleus of the atom, that manifest themselves as waves if we look at them as waves, and manifest themselves as particles if we look at them as particles. It all depends on how we decide to measure them, but basically we can say that an electron is both everywhere and nowhere at the same time.

As we never really know where the electron is, then better to look at it as a probability wave. Probability waves are much more easily seen as transparencies. Where the colour is stronger (less transparent) is where there is a larger probability of finding the electron. The forces that keep the electron around the nucleus are the weak nuclear forces and they are responsible for the atoms ability to form molecules, which makes the millions of different molecules that we see as structural reality. So really it is not the objects themselves (remember the atom is 99.9999… % empty space) that make up reality, but rather the forces between the objects that make up reality as we know it.

The strong nuclear forces are what allow the elements to be made, and the weak nuclear forces bring molecules into existence. And we have already seen that it is the forces between the objects that are fundamental in creating our universe, not the objects themselves. We can see the same with people. It is not so much the individual people’s ideas and realities that we see, but rather the interaction between many different people’s ideas and notions of reality.

So let’s have a look at the life lines like in the other painting, which can just as much represent a person, as a point of view, a reality or an idea.

Linha de vida de uma pessoa.

Life line of one person

Life line of another person

Life line of another person

As duas vidas em simultâneo,

The two life lines viewed simultaneously

...and only the interactions.

and just the interactions!

Just as transparencies were a good analogy to the probability of positioning, it is also a good analogy as to the realities shared by people. We can imagine that each life line has a colour, which reflect that life’s ideas and opinions (notions of reality). Just as some opinions are compatible, some are not. The vaster we can make our transparency, the more vast our notion of reality will be. The more transparent we are, the more open we are to other points of view. Tolerance is a function of the ego, acceptance is the key.

The nucleus of the atom consists of neutrons and protons and they have an enormous attractive force between them, the strong nuclear force, millions of times larger in magnitude than the weak nuclear forces. Alas, it is this force that is extracted in a nuclear reactor or bomb. So how come the protons and neutrons don’t smash into each other with such force that they eliminate each other? Well, that is what would happen if the system was static, however what happens is that the protons and neutrons spin around each other at such high speeds (very close to the speed of light) that the immense centrifugal speed created by this velocity is exactly balances out the enormous attractive force. Remember that in these paintings it is not the objects that are being represented but the forces between them.

People also form nuclei of friends, of families, of tribes, of countries … and of ideas! The ideas at the centre are the most fundamental. They are the strongest bonds, like the bonds with family and friends. It is this strong nuclear force that makes all the elements we know and ultimately also the building blocks of reality. It is strange to see that the world we see as fixed and stable is in fact extremely dynamic and made of energy/mass (we should bear in mind here that Einstein taught is that matter and energy are interchangeable). More importantly that that which we see as the material world is actually an agglomeration of forces; it is the forces which create that which we see and feel, it is the forces in the spaces between objects that determines what reality is.

Remember that the balancing of forces to create stability is also a very good analogy for the strong relationships between people. There has to be a balance of forces, between people, there has to be a force that separates, that brings freedom, and there has to be a force that unites, as part of a group. And it is the constant flux of these forces that will hold relationships together.

As we have seen, nothing is static, everything is a flux, a dynamic agglomeration of forces. Everything expands and contracts, as if it were breathing. Expansion is outwardly and opens the mind to new ideas, contraction is inwardly and sorts out the new information and settles it into place.

Expansion 130cm by 110cm Acrylic on canvas 2007

Expansion 130cm by 110cm Acrylic on canvas 2007

There is a constant flow, and expansion of space, of feelings, of probabilities. Before any decision there is an expansion, an inflation of the probabilities of possible outcomes, the future is open. Then with every decision made there is a contraction or a collapse of the possibilities as one is chosen in this reality, the future defined. Which leads us on to an enormous amount of new possible outcomes, once again; expansion.

Contraction 100cm by 100cm Acrylic on canvas 2007

Contraction 100cm by 100cm Acrylic on canvas 2007

Expansion is active, it is discovery. Contraction is passive, it is reflection and understanding.

This is how we learn, first we must expand our reality to take in new ideas, new concepts. Then we must contract to settle these new discoveries into our understanding. Then we are ready to expand again and take in and understand even more.

Gravity is no longer seen as string between two objects, it is now seen as a distortion in space/time. Once again we see the incredible balance between the forces that unite and the forces that separate. The interesting thing about gravity is that anything that has mass has gravity, which means that every atom creates a distortion in the space/time around it. Hence space/time looks more like a rugged sea than a smooth bent belt. One thing can be said about gravity and this is that creates a condition for things that are similar to be drawn to each other. We should remember that just as the planet Earth exerts gravity on us, so we exert gravity on it (of course of a much smaller magnitude). So let’s try to think of gravity not as a force we emit but rather as a condition created around us by our distortion of space/time.

Gravity 80cm by 80cm Acrylic on canvas 2007

Gravity 80cm by 80cm Acrylic on canvas 2007

There is gravity between people; people with similar ideas (with similar realities) are drawn together, they unite. This is what creates movements in art and music and political parties, etc. The more people that believe any one reality, the easier it is for others to believe in that reality. As if the quantity of believing consciousnesses created a greater mass and so a greater gravity, so that people with less established realities are drawn to assume the reality believed by the greater number of people. (This could be a survival instinct). We see this in religions, cults and dictatorships. There are also people who seem to exert more gravity than others, surely they are more charismatic, but I think it is the fact that they believe more in their own personal reality than the people around them believe in their own personal realities. In a way we could see them as being more dense people that create a greater distortion in the space/time of the collective unconscious around them. Therefore we see that all people are fundamentally the same and so are capable of doing exactly the same things, this because we learn to be that which we are.

Everything is connected. Physics tells us that every particle in the whole universe is connected to every other particle. Not by inference, A connected to B, and B connected to C, but yes that each particle is directly connected to every other particle. The new physics also tells us that in a certain manner every particle contains every other particle so that the whole of the universe is contained in all its parts. Maybe the best way to visualize it is to consider a passage from an Upanishad (sacred Hindu text), that talks of a room in a heaven where there are hung millions of pearls, but they are all hung in such a manner that each pearl reflects every other pearl.

Everything we do lets of energy, a movement a word a thought, this energy affects every particle in the whole universe and passes on through to parallel universes. Whenever we talk of parallel universes (or parallel realities) we must ask ourselves; where are these located? Well, if everything is connected and every particle contains every other particle than location ceases to exist and the problem evaporates. Everything is happening here and now. The different realities/universes can be just different frequencies of the same energy, what we experience depends which reality we are tuned into.

In the same way that all the different frequencies of the electromagnetic spectrum can occupy the same space, the infinite number of parallel universe also occupy exactly the same space as this one, simply on different frequencies.
